Burnout signs: how to tell it apart from being tired

The most useful test is simple: rest fixes tiredness. If you took two proper days off and came back feeling the same, you are probably not looking at tiredness.

What burnout tends to look like

The flatness is the part people miss. Stress feels like too much. Burnout often feels like nothing, and people read that as laziness in themselves. It is not laziness. It is what running past empty for a long time looks like.

Why a holiday does not fix it

A week away removes the load temporarily. It does not change what is producing the load. Most people feel better for two or three days after returning, then land back where they were, and conclude something is wrong with them. Nothing is wrong with them. The conditions did not change.

What tends to move the needle

When it is more than burnout

If the flatness follows you into things you do purely for enjoyment, if you are sleeping far more or far less than usual, or if you have started thinking you are a burden, that is past the point where work adjustments help on their own. Talking to a professional is the right next step, and it is an ordinary one.

If there is something you have been carrying alone, writing it down without your name attached is one way to set it down.
