Feeling lonely even around people
Loneliness in an empty house makes sense to people. Loneliness at a table full of friends does not, so they assume it means something is wrong with them. It does not. The two are simply not the same thing.
Being around people is not the same as being known
What relieves loneliness is not proximity. It is the sense that someone has an accurate picture of you. You can spend all evening with people who like you and still go home lonely, because the version of you at the table was the edited one.
This is why loneliness often gets worse in busy periods, and worse again for people who are good at being pleasant company. The better you are at the edited version, the less anyone reaches the rest.
The loop it creates
- You feel unknown, so you assume nobody wants the unedited version
- You keep things light to be easy to be around
- Nothing deepens, which confirms that nobody wants it
- Reaching out starts to feel like an imposition
Everyone in the loop is being considerate. That is what makes it so hard to break — nobody is doing anything wrong.
What tends to break it
- Say one true thing that is slightly more than you would normally say. Not a confession — one degree past small talk.
- Go first. Almost everyone is waiting for someone else to go first.
- Choose depth over frequency. One person who knows the real situation beats twelve who know the summary.
- Repetition builds closeness more than intensity does. The same person, regularly, in an unremarkable way.
- Write it down when there is genuinely nobody available. Getting it out of the edited version and into words is a real step, not a substitute one.
When it has settled in
Long-running loneliness affects sleep, health and mood in measurable ways, and it is strongly linked with depression in both directions. If it has been months, and it is dragging the rest of your life with it, talking to a professional is a reasonable and effective thing to do.
If there is something you have been carrying alone, writing it down without your name attached is one way to set it down.
If the heaviness does not lift, please do not carry it by yourself.
